Beyond the Screen: Why Real Human Connection is Saving Our High Streets

In an era of endless scrolling and personalised algorithms, there is one thing technology still hasn’t quite mastered … the feeling of belonging.

We’ve all been there, walking down a bustling street, eyes glued to a smartphone, missing the world around us. But at FROM YOU TO ME, we believe the best moments in life don’t happen behind a glass screen. They happen when you connect with people. They can also often happen in the aisles of a local boutique, over the counter of a family-run shop and through the genuine smile of a business owner who knows your name.

That’s why we are thrilled to announce our new initiative: Making Local Connections.

We are more digitally connected than ever, yet we’re losing the human moments that actually matter. Our founder, Neil Coxon, puts it perfectly: “Presence is powerful. We want to champion the idea that time spent together is never wasted.”

The Making Local Connections campaign is a rallying cry for the high street. It’s about putting the phone away and rediscovering the joy of real-life contact. It’s about celebrating those unique spaces where you can meet, feel seen, and experience the kind of customer service that a ‘Buy Now’ button simply can't provide.

Making Local Connections Week: Save the Date
While we want to celebrate local shops every day, everything culminates in Making Local Connections Week, commencing September 21st, 2026. In the lead-up to the busy Christmas season, we are partnering with independent retailers across the UK to bring new energy to our town centres. We’re helping shops create meaningful moments, from in-store events to digital detox zones, all helping to ensure our high streets remain the beating heart of our communities.

We Want to Hear Your Stories
Have you experienced incredible service lately? Is there a local shop that goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome? Maybe it’s a bookstore that remembers your favourite genre, or a gift shop that helped you find the perfect gift for a loved one. Which shop makes you feel more connected to the people around you, where you could go if you want a real conversation? Has a store really made a difference in your local community?
We want to showcase these local heroes, so please tell us your story.

Share your favourite high street experiences with us on social media using #MakingLocalConnections or email us to nominate a store that deserves the spotlight.

Why This Matters to Us
For nearly 20 years, FROM YOU TO ME has been in the business of relationships. Since 2007, our bestselling Journals of a Lifetime have helped families capture stories and strengthen bonds.
We know that a great story needs a place to start. Often, those stories can begin on the high street, the place where we find the perfect gift, meet a friend for coffee, or strike up a conversation with a neighbour. By supporting our local retailers, we aren't just shopping, we are preserving the social fabric that helps keep us all connected.

Join the Movement
Whether you are a shopper who loves your local village or a retailer looking to join the conversation, there is a place for you here:

Consumer: Visit your local high street this week, leave the phone in your pocket and say hello to a shopkeeper.
Retailers: Access our free Making Local Connections Toolkit to get window stickers, event templates, and PR assets to help your store thrive and build towards the event week in September.

We care about human connection. Let’s make it personal again.
