There’s a story unfolding in Bath.
Under Johann van Graan, a team recently just making up the numbers is now making history as Bath Rugby win three trophies in one season, the first time that's ever been done in English rugby.
A season to remember, not because of some magic playbook (though Van Graan’s ever-present notebook might suggest otherwise, and he does need one of our Twickenham notebooks), but because the entire club understands what makes them great: shared purpose, deep belief, and a ruthless obsession with what comes next and working really hard to deliver it.
Now, we’re not in the rugby business (unless someone in the design team is secretly moonlighting as a scrum half), but we are in the business of stories and moments. Of vision and dreams. And what’s happening at Bath feels familiar, like a leadership workbook dressed in blue, black and white.
Here’s what I take from it:
1. The Inner Circle is Everything
Van Graan talks often about culture and the inner circle. Focus on what you do. Yes, know the competition, but don’t obsess over them. Obsess instead over your standard, your belief, what makes you you.
The inner circle are the people who set the tone. Who live the values. Who show up for each other when no one’s watching. Culture isn’t a glossy presentation, it’s what happens in the quiet moments. It's about everyone.
2. It’s Not About the Last Match, It’s About the Next One
Celebrate the wins, frame the jersey, raise the glass, tell the story. But don’t get stuck in it.
Whether it’s a record quarter or a rough one, the only question that really matters is: What’s next?
Because progress doesn’t care how comfortable we are. It just keeps moving.
3. We Dream Boldly, Then We Get to Work
Van Graan didn’t show up saying “let’s survive.” He built belief. Quietly. Consistently.
He gave his team permission to dream big—and then held them accountable to deserve it.
Vision without execution is just daydreaming. Execution without vision is just busyness. We need both.
4. Be the Best Version of You, for the Team
Success isn’t about a solo try or a killer presentation. It’s about the kind of teammate who lifts others.
Be generous with your effort. Be humble with your wins. Do the hard work no one sees, but everyone feels.
5. Moments Matter
At FROM YOU TO ME moments are our business. We aren’t just running a company, we help people share stories and capture memories that last.
We need to do that in our team too. The laughs. The small wins. The rituals. The birthday cake that turns into tradition. The what 3 words that summarise our weekends. These are the things that turn colleagues into teammates, and teams into families.
Johann talks about family often. He cares. Because nothing is more important.
Our own values reflect that. We’re here to bring people closer to those who matter … our customers, yes, but also each other.
Yes, results matter. Goals matter. Trophies matter.
But so do people.
So do dreams.
So do the quiet, consistent little things we do every day, until they turn into something extraordinary.
As Van Graan might say: “Today’s win was great, but now we must focus on the next match.”
In our case: “Help share the next story.”
And maybe, just maybe, we’ll lift our own kind of trophy. It might not be silverware … but honestly?
No medals, no match balls, but if you’re in a team that believes, backs each other, and laughs along the way ... that’s a win on any scoreboard.
Thanks for reading, and let me know what you think ... whether you are a Bath rugby supporter or not!
For me, sport is all about passion, inspiration and friendship and what a weekend it was.
