Sue Barlow, 57, a part-time teacher from Nottingham, is a mum and grandmother who has been a from you to me Ambassador since March 2011. Sue tells us the story that inspired her to join the from you to me team.
“A love of the products was my main drive to become a from you to me Ambassador. Having seen the opportunity on fromyoutome.com, I contacted Neil, the MD, who talked me through everything – I signed up and have since organised three events where I’ve sold over 50 products. It’s a fun and rewarding way to earn some extra money.
I began as a from you to me Ambassador earlier this year when my daughter bought a Dear Grandma journal for me, and a Dear Grandad for my husband, Stuart, as a gift from our new granddaughter. I got so much pleasure from recording my life for our grandchild and felt inspired to encourage others to do the same in a fun and informal way.
In 2008 I lost my mother. I wrote some poetry to help me deal with the loss. I thought I knew her but there were so many things that I regret not asking her. I felt that I needed to record more things and write them down. I felt inspired to try to encourage people to talk to each other in their families and avoid missing vital memories and experiences. Also, as a teacher, I realise that family relationships can be difficult and, therefore, I love the idea of bringing people together and celebrating families.
I try to make my parties fun. One involved everyone rolling about laughing when recalling childhood memories! I often devise a list of questions (inspired by the from you to me books) to warm everyone up, like ‘What were your favourite sweets?’ and ‘Do you recall getting lost as a child? Who found you?!’. It’s a lovely thing to do, and as we all have some connection with loved-ones, everyone is a potential customer.
Being part of the from you to me team is great. The warmth and connection element of the journals is prevalent within the organisation, and I’ve always found everyone to be very supportive and positive. Neil has often taken on board my ideas and comments and made me feel part of the team.
As for my Dear Grandma journal... it’s work in progress. You can’t rush these things. I’m so excited about recording my thoughts and memories for my grandchildren. My husband and I have our special ‘journal time’ when we set aside regular time to write. It’s great for our self-development. We often shed a few tears – tears of joy, of course!”
